TRISHA KANELLOPOULOS/ OCTOBER 2026

In collaboration with the artist

born in Princeton. Initially pursued photography, studying in New York, before eventually relocating and settling in Munich in 1975. Although largely self-taught, she began exploring painting in 1995, attending various academies and studying under artists Jim Dine and Clinton Storm.

Her artistic direction took a particularly interesting turn in 2012, when she developed a profound interest in edaphology and the colours coming from earth. From that point onwards, she began working almost exclusively with soil and other naturally sourced materials, which she personally collects from the ground. Her approach is beautifully encapsulated in her own words: “Painting with the ground we stand on.”

The work is associated with the Colour Field movement, exploring the emotional and perceptual possibilities of colour through expansive surfaces and subtle variations in tone and texture. Yet, in Kanellopoulos's case, colour carries an additional dimension. It is not simply composed or mixed in a studio, but extracted directly from different landscapes, giving each work a geographical identity.

In our own words

Trisha Kanellopoulos works with natural pigments derived from soil and fragments of different stones. Her practice made me question something I had never quite considered before. Is it dirt, is it soil, or is it pigment? At what point does something we casually dismiss as earth become a medium for artistic expression?

The rest of the article and pictures to be announced soon.
